Seen through a different lens...
Seen through a different lens...
As a child, I already possessed a critical eye... for people, nature, buildings. I strived to understand what made that image unique -- what was its essence? While in school, I borrowed a friend's old Canon SLR and just started wandering around looking for interesting shots. Back in the age of film cameras, you never really knew what you
captured until the roll was developed & prints made. I quickly learned that not everything you view through the lens is world-class -- and that drove me to try again, and again.... honing my eye and capturing more and more engaging images. I was hooked. The very first thing I bought with my very first paycheck was a Nikon FM camera (now a classic) and two lenses.
I couldn't wait for the next day's sunrise and drove in to the city and set up my camera in front of a harbor, facing East. As the red-orange sun slowly emerged on the horizon, I excitedly began to shoot away. 30 minutes later, out of film but feeling hopeful,
I headed home, eager to see what I had captured. To this day, some of the best outdoor shots I've ever taken came from that first foray into the World of Photography.
Fast forward ten years, and I had discovered the thrill of combining two of my loves - Music & My Camera. I am drawn to all types of music, but back then Country Music was all the rage; and superstars such as Garth Brooks were playing three shows back-to-back, filling the largest venues to capacity each night in cities across the country. Through stubborn effort and a little luck, I became a Contributing Photographer to several national Country Music magazines. I get to take shots of my favorite performers AND get paid for it?
What a revelation...
And then came The Blues... I have a great affinity for the gritty, down-to-earth sounds and began shooting Artists famous and not-so-famous - at Blues venues around Chicago. I struck up some lasting friendships with Artists I had shot, and continue to document their talents today.
I hope you enjoy my images as much as I enjoyed capturing them... and you come back often to view my latest work.
